About The South Carolina Academy

SCAFP Family Health Foundation

The purpose of the Family Health Foundation of South Carolina is to establish and administer programs that strengthen and enhance family and community medicine. The Foundation supports activities which encourage medical students to pursue family medicine as their intended specialty and supports research activities in family medicine which ultimately may result in improved patient care and better outcomes.

Our Programs Strengthen Family Medicine

The vision of FHFSC is to strengthen and enhance family and community medicine in South Carolina. This is accomplished through the growing array of programs we carry out and pursue.

Student Preceptorship Program - The program began in 1997 and has placed more than 235 medical students in family physicians offices across the state to learn first-hand about the specialty of family medicine. The second or third year medical student receives a stipend to participate in the summer program with support coming from donations to the FHF. Additional information is available about this program, including downloadable registration forms.

South Carolina Tar Wars – This anti-tobacco program is tailored for 4th & 5th grade students. Volunteers for the program are needed each year. It only takes approximately one hour to teach a class and the FHF provides the detailed curriculum. Consider volunteering today!

Students that have participated in the Tar Wars program are eligible to participate in the Tar Wars Poster Contest. A framed certificate and savings bond is presented to the state winner and their poster is submitted to the National Tar Wars Poster Contest. Details on the Contest are included in the Tar Wars curriculum packet, accessible at www.tarwars.org.

Scholarships to AAFP National Conference of Student Members – Students members that participate in the Student Preceptorship Program are eligible for one of two scholarships offered to help defray expenses to attend the NCSM in Kansas City each August. This meeting energizes students about the specialty and is a worth-while experience.

Robert H. Taylor, MD Scholarship – This award, named for our distinguished SCAFP and AAFP Past President, Dr. Robert Taylor of Spartanburg, SC, provides a scholarship for the President’s of the Family Medicine Interest Groups to attend the SCAFP Annual Assembly. A cash award and plaque are presented at the Assembly, with the SCAFP providing housing.

Resident Scholarship to the SCAFP Annual Assembly – Each year, housing is provided for the Resident Director to attend the SCAFP Annual Assembly. The Academy waives the Assembly registration fee for residents (and students).
